The Man From Space

In August 2010, my friend Kalidas approached me with a story he had written for his son, “The Man From Space”.  He asked if I’d be interested in creating illustrations for it, and helping him transform the poem into a children’s book. The spirit of the story, as well as the comfortable rhythm of the stanzas, appealed to me immediately.

Based on information we gathered, Kalidas (pronounced like ‘cauliflower’) and I decided to self-publish the book.

I spent most of 2011 researching, sketching, revising, and painting the final illustrations (acrylic on watercolor paper). There are 16 illustrations, three of them being 2-page spreads. The dimensions of our book are 8″ wide by 10.5″ tall.

To raise funds to get the book printed, Kalidas and I launched a campaign on Kickstarter, an online fundraising platform for creative projects.  The project was live for 30 days, and on October 1, 2012, our Kickstarter campaign concluded with 93 backers and $5515 in pledges!

Our book was printed in November 2012 by Angel Printing.  For the first run we ordered 300 paperbacks and 100 hard cover books.  For inquiries about the book, please send an e-mail to gale@galewhitman.com and follow my updates on Facebook (GaleWhitmanArtStudio and TheManFromSpace).
